Crown Lengthening – Irvington

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a simple surgery to extend the length of a tooth, creating more surface area for a crown to anchor itself. After a short healing period, a final crown is placed to restore the tooth’s strength and aesthetics.

To save a tooth that has been compromised due to fracture or decay, a crown lengthening is a simple surgery that extends the length of the tooth so that the crown has more surface area of the tooth on which to anchor itself. Sometimes teeth break below the gumline or are too short to hold a crown. By removing some of the gum tissue and exposing more of the tooth, we now have a more solid foundation for the restorative crown to grab onto.

What to Expect During a Crown Lengthening Procedure:

  1. Before your visit your dentist will likely create a temporary crown as you await the final restoration
  2. Your periodontal specialist will apply a numbing anesthetic to ensure your comfort
  3. Your gums will be recontoured in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and also provides enough surface area on which to anchor your final crown
  4. A short healing period will follow and you can return to work and eating right away. You will need to avoid some foods and beverages, especially alcohol and no smoking, which could deteriorate your healing process.
  5. Once your gum tissue is fully healed, you’re ready to receive the final crown to restore the strength, shape, function, and aesthetics of your tooth
